Liquid Wind and Umeå Energi have completed all necessary agreements to build a large-scale e-fuel plant in Umeå. The investment of approximately 5 billion kronor will be one of the largest industrial ventures in the region.

The project, called FlagshipTHREE, will be built adjacent to Umeå Energi's combined heat and power plant Dåvaverket in Umeå Eco Industrial Park. Construction is planned to start during 2026 and the facility is expected to be operational by 2028.

100,000 tons of e-methanol per year

The plant will produce up to 100,000 tons of e-methanol annually while capturing 150,000 tons of biogenic carbon dioxide through carbon capture and utilization (CCU).

E-methanol is an e-fuel that is crucial for reducing emissions in hard-to-abate sectors such as shipping and aviation, which today consume millions of tons of fossil fuels annually.

Strong investor base

Liquid Wind is backed by major investors such as Alfa Laval, Samsung Ventures, and Siemens Energy. The project has also received environmental approval from the Land and Environment Court in Umeå, paving the way for the implementation phase.

"Many benefits for Umeå"

The project means both jobs during construction and long-term employment opportunities when the facility is operational. At the same time, Umeå's position as a hub for green transition and sustainable industry is strengthened.

The facility will become part of Umeå Eco Industrial Park, where companies and operations collaborate on sustainable solutions and circular flows. Proximity to Dåvaverket enables efficient use of energy and raw materials.

Third project for Liquid Wind

FlagshipTHREE is Liquid Wind's third e-fuel plant in Sweden. AFRY has received renewed trust to design the facility, having previously worked on the company's other projects.

The investment shows how Umeå and Västerbotten are positioning themselves in the green transition, with massive investments expected to reach 1,400 billion kronor in the region in the coming years.
