The Green Birch project, which will produce sustainable aviation fuel in Umeå, has been granted state support of 10 million kronor from the Swedish Energy Agency. The funds will be used for continued project development of the facility planned at Umeå Eco Industrial Park.

Umeå Energi has signed a letter of intent with Braathens Renavia and Mana for continued collaboration on the project. The facility is intended to produce sustainable aviation fuel, known as SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel), based on waste gasification.

"This is an important step in the project's development and gives the consortium the opportunity to proceed with detailed planning and feasibility studies," according to project information.

Large production capacity planned

The planned production volume is approximately 100,000 tons of aviation fuel per year. The facility, to be built north of Umeå, is designed for sustainable fuels based on waste gasification with planned operational start in the early 2030s.

The project is part of the green industrial transition in the region. By converting waste into aviation fuel, the aviation industry can reduce its climate footprint while utilizing waste products.

The support from the Swedish Energy Agency now enables the next phase of development work, where technology, economics, and environmental impacts will be analyzed more closely.
